Default Mode Network
The default mode network is a set of connected brain regions that becomes most active when the mind is not focused on a task, during daydreaming, self-reflection, or mind-wandering. It is associated with thinking about oneself, the past, and the future, and with the kind of mental drift that can turn into rumination.
The default mode network, often shortened to DMN, is what the brain tends to fall back on when it is not busy with a specific task. Rather than switching off during downtime, the mind reliably drifts into internally focused thought: replaying a conversation, planning tomorrow, narrating your own experience. This is normal and useful for reflection, memory, and imagining the future, but the same machinery underlies unhelpful mind-wandering and rumination when thoughts keep circling without resolving.
Meditation research has taken a strong interest in the DMN because focused attention and mindfulness practices are associated with changes in its activity and in how it coordinates with attention-related networks. A common interpretation is that practice makes it easier to notice when the mind has wandered and to gently return, rather than getting carried along by the drift. As with most brain-imaging findings, effects vary between people and studies, and the picture is still developing, so it is best treated as a helpful model rather than a settled fact.
