Amygdala

The amygdala is a pair of small, almond-shaped structures deep in the brain that help process emotion and detect potential threats. It plays a central role in the fear and stress response, rapidly flagging situations as safe or dangerous, often before conscious thought has caught up.

The amygdala acts as one of the brain's early-warning systems. It scans incoming information for anything that might matter for safety and, when it detects a possible threat, helps trigger the fast physiological response we experience as fear or alarm: a quickened heart rate, heightened alertness, a readiness to act. This happens quickly and largely automatically, which is useful in genuine emergencies but can also fire for things that are stressful rather than dangerous, like a difficult email or a looping worry.

Crucially, the amygdala works in concert with other regions, especially parts of the prefrontal cortex involved in appraisal and regulation. A common way to describe emotional balance is the back-and-forth between a reactive alarm signal and the slower, more deliberate processing that can put it in context. Research suggests that practices training attention and calm, such as mindfulness and slow breathing, are associated with changes in how this circuitry responds to stress, though findings vary and the science is still developing.
