Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve, running from the brainstem through the neck and chest to the abdomen, and it is the main channel of the parasympathetic, or rest-and-digest, nervous system. Slow breathing and humming are often called vagal toning because they can shift the body toward a calmer physiological state.
The vagus nerve is a two-way communication line between the brain and the major organs, including the heart, lungs, and gut. As the backbone of the parasympathetic nervous system, it carries the signals that slow the heart rate, ease digestion, and dial down the body's alert response after a stressor has passed. It also sends information the other way, from the body up to the brain, which is part of why physical state and mood are so tightly linked.
This is where breathing practices come in. Slow exhalations, humming, and certain relaxation techniques are often described as vagal toning because they engage this pathway and can nudge the body toward a calmer state. The effect is real but modest and individual, so it is best understood as gently supporting the body's own regulation rather than flipping a switch. Terms like polyvagal are popular online but describe theories that remain debated, so it is worth treating strong claims with caution.
