Heart Rate Variability (HRV)

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is the natural variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. Rather than ticking like a metronome, a healthy heart speeds up and slows down slightly with each breath. Higher variability is generally associated with better recovery and a more adaptable stress response, though normal ranges differ from person to person.

Heart rate variability measures something subtler than heart rate itself. Even at a steady sixty beats per minute, the exact gap between beats keeps shifting by fractions of a second, and HRV captures that fluctuation. It reflects the balance between the two arms of the autonomic nervous system, the activating sympathetic side and the calming parasympathetic side working through the vagus nerve, so it is often read as a rough window into how well the body switches between effort and recovery.

Generally, higher variability is associated with good recovery, fitness, and stress resilience, while a temporarily lower reading can accompany fatigue, illness, or stress. Important caveats: HRV is highly individual, sensitive to sleep, hydration, and measurement method, and only meaningful when tracked as your own trend over time rather than compared against someone else. It is a signal, not a verdict.

Slow, paced breathing is one of the more reliable ways to influence HRV in the moment, which is part of why breathing exercises feel steadying, and why HRV comes up often in discussions of meditation and recovery.
